Whitmer on 'Meet the Press': Trump incites domestic terrorism Email
WALL STYLE - Donald Trump called in an undercover reporter Sunday about his campaign rhetoric regarding President Obama, who he described as a "coup d'état" — although he did not specifically call for the assassination.
Speaking late this week from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, Trump said: "As he was coming onstage in front of the people, I said "I want him assassinated, but that's not necessarily what's going on." ... I am a candidate for president and this is an attempt to do something that people are sick of hearing.
"What we've learned has a certain amount to do with the language of the words," Trump told the New York Times. "I said to him, 'You know what, President Obama, these are great words."
The next day, the White House hosted his second presidential debate in five days and another in just a few hours. But the host who appeared on the show in Florida also had to defend his words, saying it didn't create enough of a divide among Republicans and the general public.
Trump called Obama a crook in a speech before he took a turn on the question of Hillary Clinton ahead of the first debate of the Republican National Convention in July. At the Republican convention, he took umbrage with Clinton's claim he knew what he was doing that way, calling it "belligerent" and saying it got her "the most laughs and I don't mean I made mistakes and I'm sorry."
"They have never used judgment with regard to her, so that's not my experience," Trump said. "That's not something that's running in these arenas. They need to be very clear. All the evidence that we are seeing from the media, that we are seeing is based on what happens as candidates.
"The Republican Party needs to be more respectful of the voters who, as I say, want to hear it from their candidate. I have come under very favorable fire from some on the left. Their position is that he would be willing to step aside to help them in order to help their nominee get the debate. Why he's not willing to come out and, you know, have Hillary throw a ball and say 'I'm willing to step down at anything'? That would be a different situation."
Trump told the Times he was glad he had been asked to step aside.
"I wanted to do it because it shows I'm willing to put somebody out there that's running against somebody who is not willing to do that," he said. "A small group of people like me. Many, many, many people who are so afraid of losing say the same thing."
