Brief history: This is the year on which Hackathon Australia began. It was organised by Microsoft, while others went to other companies. They were all set up at the same address, same address, same room, same location. The only thing different is that not one company was able to build on it.
There's lots to come from this next year as well. In 2016, I did my first Hackathon in Brisbane, and this was the first ever Hackathon in Sydney. I also did another in Canberra in August, and this was the first event I'd attend in Melbourne. It felt very organised with all the other cities in the world.
We've also had a couple of events this year. The first one in Berlin saw a huge crowd of 80,000 in the Park, and the other in Toronto at the beginning of July. So I think the big thing for us is getting these huge rallies in various cities together across the country, across everything from Sydney and Toronto.
And this one is particularly successful. It's a huge one. This one in Brisbane. It took up, in some places, an hour to organise the first big demonstration. This was very big, very large. Just taking the big rallies out of the way was very important, and this is a new event you can definitely learn about.
A few other important things too. At least a couple of times this year we've had a new and very special event happening in our own country, and it's a wonderful way to raise awareness and bring awareness back to the community in this country. I am really looking forward to seeing some of this at various other large events at this time, especially in the fall, because there are lots of great events there already.
Q: How long have you been involved in the community and what is it like to be a part of it?
A: It feels really great to be involved with Hackathon Australia this year. We definitely have a great team here. There are lots of people looking to come from Australia, like me, and we know what they need, especially in Australia, so we're really excited and we're looking forward to that. This year will be quite amazing, so stay tuned!
What do you think of Hackathon Australia as a project ?
A: It's very much a community based programme, which it certainly is. It's quite different to an organisation like this where people all over the world come together and contribute to each other. Hackathon Australia really has a unique voice in the international community, and it has the potential to provide it with real potential and the confidence that it has.
We're very excited to be part of the project - to have it under our umbrella and being a part of it, whether you're part of a community project or not is something that's very cool, and I really look forward to seeing how everybody can get involved, especially on the day of the programme.
