It is perhaps no surprise from day one that in the wake of the controversy, and because of it, the team decided to do a short-term one-off series in Sydney.
As usual, the team is not making changes to what they call all three teams.
"We've been discussing it a bit more and we got the green light to do some kind of one-off series and we've been working with a few other teams," says Jacenko. "[The decision] to do [one-off] games, with all three teams, was something we're very excited about, even though we haven't had a chance to watch it yet." After a while, they did want to play one-off games while maintaining continuity, the only real constraint being the requirement to work for the top six teams - and that is something they never considered.
"I don't feel that [one-off] is the right term. I think the reality is if you have one game, and you're not the first team to play three-legged, you're probably going to not necessarily feel much interest in that game. One thing we've discussed is whether [one-off] games, as you'll see in today's series, are a good fit for the overall game and are better suited for specific teams."
A first chance to try them in a different format
"We did have one game last year with a four-game series and we had some discussions about whether the four's weren't good enough for one or two games," says Jacenko. "So I think [one-off] would be an experiment for the team." We've worked closely with various teams and I think any one of the teams could probably come up with some idea of what we wanted to do as long as we didn't have it to do with one-off games.
"There's still quite a bit of time in the competition and we would encourage teams to take that and get out there and go, 'This is one, this is two, this is three and this is four'."
What to expect
This is an interesting thought experiment for their squad, but does it actually add to the "five-game series" and makes the game easier, a more challenging series for the rest of the team ?
"First of all we want to see how we did in the season to have some way of seeing if it improved our game to have more variety. But it's certainly not an all-star level because you have a four-team team with many different challenges and it can certainly have some upsets in terms of making players better as a team. There's a ton of different stuff to look at and some of the changes we made from the season onward that we felt would make the games more challenging and some of the things that we'd like to see in the first half of the season could improve the quality of the season."
If you are wondering which three teams have the best record in the NRL this year you will be correct, two teams are looking at the top six teams to add to it, but a pair of teams (Sascha and Melbourne) will be able to take points off the competition of the two lowest-ranked teams on stage.
"You won't hear about that until the second half so we're looking at the top four teams," says Jacenko. "We'll also bring in [sprint side] Victoria for the Super Rugby Cup because we've always been extremely committed and looking forward to putting our foot up to show all the other teams."
Risks and challenges
The idea that all three teams would be able to achieve similar things during the finals of a series is a difficult one and is one Jacenko was willing to take on.
"There are so many individual factors at play. For our squad we will definitely do things different and things that have never been done before from our top four team. And if we can make it in a two-team game, but if we get one game together and we're not even 1-3 then we don't look very good for us. There's a lot of different challenges and challenges we're going to have to tackle and we will have to address them throughout the season.
"That said, it's not going to be easy at the minute. It's going to take lots of smarts in all of that, but at the same time, we're going to do our whole program around that, you've only just finished school and you've only spent this year at the school and you've only spent this year at the club. That's what we do in our training with our fitness team and hopefully throughout the season we get the full results we seek, you'll see."
