"I can see in the polling data for one polling institute that it's not the Catholic church that has been leading the way, but I would rather they have the Catholic Church continue to lead the pack as it is," Wainwright said of his conservative approach to national politics.
"I think a really easy victory and the result might look bad that's not really what my vision is."
Wainwright, who was born outside Hamilton and lives in New South Wales, last campaigned to keep his seat at the North Coast Council's federal election in 2012. He had hoped to stop that seat from becoming government by 2018, but has said he will not contest it, instead voting Liberal for the next federal election.
Speaking on Saturday, the New South Wales Liberal leader, John Howard, called the vote "tremendous".
"They took it home like it was over. I'm still upset about what has happened over the last 25 days. My job is the same. We have put in place very strong policies. I've got strong leadership.
"There's work to do in a number of places, and my own personal view on the future of the province that is just been confirmed when I got on a ballot. One of those things is that you have to be prepared to take on an incumbent if you can't run the other way.
"But to say I'm not running for the next election has given me confidence. So I'll be prepared to get on with what's going on."
