SOUTH Australian National University student and activist Aaron Toner has set the record straight about himself on social media on Wednesday.
After calling an Australian woman "silly" after a man she was with reported a "huge shark-hilarious attack" earlier in the day, he tweeted: "Wow. I love the way they call the big kangaroos. How do i explain this to someone?"
Toner has also publicly defended his actions and described himself as an activist who has worked on Shark-related social media.
"I'm not a man by nature. I don't care how many people I meet have no idea of the science or science. But people just need to watch out," Toner said. "I've personally heard about one recent incident during which a shark had bitten an Australian woman over and over again.
"I believe shark bites happen for real - or some might call it that."
As a self-described animal-rights activist, Toner worked as an animal expert at the Australian Institute of Shark Biology before moving to South America, where he spent eight years studying the animals.

In 2010, Toner launched a campaign to ensure that the university could protect its wildlife.
His campaign is now in the pipeline and aims to reach "all students of the community in the world" - including those from the university's social media community and students on Twitter.
Toner's new post included the following: "It's safe to say 'I am in this country as a dog. I am not scared of sharks'. I would say I don't have a problem with that at all. My problem is shark bites. I think every year, a bit of luck goes a long way and I can only imagine what it's like to be in a situation like this."
Toner told The Straits Times he never felt the need to do any of this to prove he was not a part of the debate.
"It is a good idea to say, 'oh this is important to prove this and to have those people out there as witnesses to what I believe. Is there a reason that there's a shark in that area?'" he said.
